Frequently asked questions

Why is fly ash treated as hazardous waste?

Because it concentrates the heavy metals and soluble chlorides that leave the combustion process. Landfilling it consumes land and leaves a long-term liability, which is what this programme is designed to avoid.

What is recovered from fly ash?

Sodium chloride at 200 t/d and 98.5% purity or better, and potassium chloride at 60 t/d and 93% or better. The evaporator condensate is returned to reuse at below 1,000 mg/L.

How many sites are involved?

Seven, with capacities of 800 t/d, 400 t/d, three at 300 t/d and two at 150 t/d, together handling 2,750 t/d of fly ash.

What is the status of this programme?

Under construction, with works starting in 2026. The status shown on the project card is kept current.

Why does the salt have to reach product grade?

Because a salt that cannot be sold is simply hazardous waste in another form. Reaching a specification is what turns the programme from disposal into recovery.
